Apprenticeship Training to be Upgraded in Ontario
Apprenticeship training is a combination of on-the-job learning and in-class instruction.
Apprentices are paid while gaining work experience. Apprentices are workers and earn a salary for the work they do. Apprentices' salary increases in step with their increased knowledge and skills.
The Ontario Ministry of Education has a number of ways to help you get started in an apprenticeship program. In Ontario, there are more than 150 skilled trades ranging from auto mechanics to arborists; and from early childhood educators to chefs.
Approximately 110,000 apprentices are currently learning a trade in Ontario.
Ontario is taking steps to promote the skilled trades and modernize the apprenticeship training system by establishing a new College of Trades. The Ontario government intends to introduce legislation in spring 2009 that, if passed, would implement the new College of Trades.
The College of Trades would promote careers in skilled trades while ensuring Ontario's skilled trades system meets the growing needs of the economy. The College would put skilled trades on a similar footing with teachers, doctors and nurses, who have their own professional colleges.
If you are considering real work experience as an apprentice you have to look at the job, job description, length of time to train and courses and skills to help prepare for your career.
